Big 12 Notebook: April 25, 2025

West Virginia continue to sit alone atop the Big 12 standings at 13-3. Kansas, Arizona, and TCU are right behind the Mountaineers at 12-6.

Oklahoma State and Houston had a game rained out last weekend, which makes a total of three Big 12 games the Cowboys have been unable to play this season, the equivalent of a weekend series. West Virginia has two games they were unable to play and Houston has one game. Time will tell how this affects the final outcome of league play and the 12 team field that makes it to Arlington late next month.

League Notes

Arizona

Brendan Summerhill returned for the Wildcats on Wednesday against UT Arlington after losing a month due to a fractured hand. Summerhill hit the first pitch he saw in his return for a home run and finished the game going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBI, and two walks. Arizona has played well over the last month without Summerhill, but getting him back in the lineup makes the Wildcats tougher for their Big 12 opponents.

Arizona State

Arizona State is coming off of a series win against Texas Tech in Phoenix last weekend. Landon Hairston has been swinging a hot bat of late as he had seven extra-base hits in his last nine games, including two home runs, four doubles, and one triple. The Sun Devils are batting an exceptional .389 this season when the team has put the first ball of an at-bat into play.

Baylor

Baylor won a home series against Utah last weekend after losing on Thursday night. The Bears are 15-4 this year when picking up 10 or more base hits. Baylor owns a +87 overall run differential this season (292 runs scored, 205 runs allowed), which ranks 5th in the Big 12. Only West Virginia (+164), Kansas (+150), UCF (+121), and TCU (+101) are ahead of the Bears. Baylor's 3.27 walks per nine innings ranks 11th in the country.

BYU

Ryder Robinson earned Big 12 Co-Player of the Week honors after collecting five doubles and two home runs over four games, including three games against Arizona. Payton Gubler came out of the bullpen to pitch five innings with five strikeouts in BYU’s 12-5 win over Arizona last weekend. Gubler has been a starter most of the season.

Cincinnati

Right-hander Nathan Taylor has pitched at least five innings in eight of nine starts this season. Taylor ranks second in the Big 12 in ERA at 2.73. Offensively, catcher Jack Natili leads Cincinnati in Big 12 play with 17 RBl. Natili also has multiple hits in 11 games this season for the Bearcats. Kerrington Cross continues to lead the Big in both batting average and on-base percentage. Landyn Vidourek has driven at least two runs in 11 games this season.

Houston

Antoine Jean is leading Division I pitchers with 4.47 hits allowed per nine innings pitched and leading the nation with 16.24 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, while striking out the 11th most hitters in all of college baseball with 80 and allowing the ninth best WHIP of 0.88. The Cougars have 11 road wins this season, which is third-most in the Big 12. Houston has improved their road win total from 2024 by 175% with seven road games remaining.

Kansas

Jackson Hauge was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after he hit .467/.526/1.000 with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, six runs scored, three walks and a 1.526 OPS in four games last week, including a sweep of Kansas State in Lawrence. Hauge crushed a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning last Friday and then extended his on-base streak to 28 games on Tuesday at Nebraska.

Hauge leads the Big 12 with 17 home runs, 60 RBI, and 118 total bases.

Kansas State

The Wildcats are a tale of two teams at home and on the road. Kansas State has won 14 of its 15 home games in 2025. At home, the Wildcat offense is hitting .335 and slugging .673 with 41 home runs and averages 9.9 runs per game on 11.1 hits at Tointon Family Stadium. On the flip side, the Wildcats are hitting .244 and slugging .494 in games away from home, averaging 5.8 runs per game and 8.2 hits per game. The Kansas State bullpen boasts a 4.89 ERA at home, striking out 126 compared to 38 walks (3.32 strikeout-to-walk ratio). In road and neutral contests, Wildcat pitching has a combined ERA of 5.88 with 244 strikeouts and 125 walks.

Oklahoma State

Brayden Smith Leads the Cowboys with a .370 batting average in Big 12 play. Smith also leads the team in doubles, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage in the Big 12. Nolan Schubart is hitting.395 with runners in scoring position this season and is third in the Big 12 with 36 walks.

TCU

Tommy LaPour turned in his fifth straight quality start last weekend against UCF and lowered his ERA to 2.15, a mark that leads the Big 12 and ranks 19th nationally. LaPour earned Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week honors for his effort. Chase Brunson has reached safely in all 40 games this season and he has hit 10 home runs for the Horned Frogs.

Texas Tech

Over the last seven games the Texas Tech offense has come alive, scoring 55 runs in that span. It began with a pair of nine run games against Baylor and has featured three games with nine runs and a game with 12 runs. Over the last three games, the Red Raiders have scored 29 runs.

Zane Petty turned in the longest and best outing of his career in last weekends finale against Arizona State, the lone win for Texas Tech in Phoenix. Petty allowed just three runs (two in the first inning) in the start. Petty was terrific in a bounce-back performance pitching into both the seventh and eighth innings for the first time in his career.

UCF

The Knights won their series at home against TCU last weekend after dropping the first game. Matt Sauser was named a Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week after earning the decision for the Knights in a 4-2 win over TCU. Sauser scattered five hits over eight innings while striking out eight batters. It was the first career start for Sauser and he was terrific as he faced the minimum batters in six of his eight innings pitched. The Knights lead the Big 12 in hitting and they are led by Edian Espinal who is hitting .352. The Knights are also second in the Big 12 in ERA with three pitchers having an ERA under two.

Utah

Shortstop Core Jackson continues to lead an Utah offense with a lot of potential. Jackson has a .395 batting average, to go with 15 doubles, nine home runs, 34 RBI, and 45 runs scored, all of which are team highs. Additionally, Austen Roellig (.347), Santino Panaro (.310), and Tyler Quinn (.301) are each hitting above .300.
